Description

Multisensory matters is the home of Turn Tables, the card game with a multisensory approach to understanding times tables. It uses several sensory channels simultaneously to access the brain, in a similar way to teaching spelling to students with dyslexia. Students use the visual channel to see the multiplication diagram, giving them a concrete idea to hold on to. They use their voice to say the multiplication fact so the auditory channel can hear their representation of the of the multiplication fact. They use their kinaesthetic channel to touch and turn the cards, giving them a tactile memories of the process. Some people cannot learn things 'parrot fashion' and Turn Tables helps those people, and in fact anyone, to build confidence with times tables by playing the game regularly. Students are encouraged to build up their own ways of calculation. There is a hints and tips section on the website and a free, downloadable support booklet. Sarah Emson is a maths and special needs teacher and she has developed this resource through working with her students over the years. Each card game comes with two sets of instructions so that it can be played as an individual game or as part of an interactive group game. It can be played at home or at school. Turn Tables is currently being made into a mobile phone app for the iphone and ipad.
